Wildfire Breaks Out in Buckley Draw Canyon, Provo

A wildfire erupted in the Buckley Draw Canyon area on Sunday afternoon, causing concern among local residents and authorities. According to the U.S. Forest Service, the fire has spread across approximately 250 to 300 acres, with the blaze located west of Khyv Peak Road and south of Slate Canyon, a popular area in Provo.

The fire began around 4:50 p.m., and Provo City quickly responded to the situation. Fire crews from both Provo Fire and Utah County Fire, including helicopters and airplane tankers, have been working tirelessly to contain the flames. Fortunately, there have been no evacuation orders issued so far, though officials are closely monitoring the situation.

A post from Provo City on Facebook confirmed that “light wind conditions are pushing the fire up the mountain,” which has made it more manageable in some areas. However, the fire has been moving rapidly through dry grass and brush, leading to concerns about its expansion.

As of 7 p.m., the wildfire had burned an estimated 250 acres and was progressing quickly up the mountain. Firefighters have been working hard to prevent it from advancing further and threatening nearby homes.

Several onlookers gathered in a nearby church parking lot to watch the aerial firefighting efforts. Nearly 100 people observed as tankers and helicopters repeatedly flew over, dropping water and fire retardant on the flames. Madison Mendell, one of the witnesses, expressed relief that the fire was moving uphill instead of towards homes, saying, “They seem to be getting it under control well, but it is also moving up the mountain.”

Kathy and Blake Mesenbrink, who recently moved from Arkansas, said they were captivated by the firefighting efforts. “It’s a shame seeing the mountains on fire, because it just destroys all the trees and stuff,” Blake Mesenbrink said. His wife, Kathy, added, “This is our playground. It’s heartache to see it burn.”

Provo City is urging residents to stay clear of the area to allow first responders to continue their work. They also issued a warning about flying drones, as they can interfere with critical air support needed to combat the fire.

As the fire continues to rage, officials are working to assess its containment, and further updates will be provided as the situation evolves.
